The West of Madagascar

In the West part of Madagascar, you can experience the real adventure. Paddle trough the Tsiribihina River with a traditional canoe in three days. The meandering, but peaceful river gives you the opportunity to experience the real Madagascar with the isolated villages, where you’ll meet happy children and other local people. If you are lucky you might spot crocodiles, lemurs and other wildlife in their natural environment. After the campfires under of bright stars and nights in tent, you’ll visit in the Tsingy de Bemaraha, the huge limestone forest. There you can climb way through the chaotic razor-sharp pinnacles and narrow caves, all the way to the top. Surely the famous Avenue the Baobabs cannot be excluded.

Destination

Day 1:

Antananarivo or Tananarive

Arrival at the international airport of Madagascar we will meet and welcome you at the airport of Antananarivo and we will transfer you to the Hotel. Overnight at the Hotel, and breakfast. Sakamanga or Chalet de Rose.

Day 2:

Antananarivo – Andasibe (140 km)

After breakfast, drive to Andasibe. On the way, after 72 km drive you will be in Marozevo village, visit at a private reserve of amphibians and reptiles called Peyrieras to see all the species of chameleons in this country, red frogs, butterfly, and snake. Arrival in Andasibe. Before your dinner, bring your flashlight for the night walk to see the animal active at night like frogs, mouse lemur and other creatures. Overnight at Hotel in Andasibe , Grace Lodge or Lemurs Park.

Day 3:

: Visit of Andasibe National Park: Exploration of the flora and fauna of the park and to find the biggest lemur in this area called Indri-Indri and listen to the special sounds he makes. The visit takes between 3 to 4 hours walk. In the afternoon, visit the island of lemurs of Vakona reserve, crossing a small river with canoe and you will be able to see more lemur species up close, like brown lemurs, bamboo lemurs. Overnight at Grace Lodge or Lemurs Lodge.

Day 4:

Andasibe -Antsirabe : Drive to Antsirabe, towards the South. The road lingers through the hilly terraced highland and you will pass through the village of Ambatolampy, where you can visit an aluminum pot atelier. Antsirabe streets are buzzing with colorful pousse-pousse, the local rickshaws. Antsirabe is an important industrial center, where you can explore the craft shops and view some architecture from the colonial times. Overnight at Vatolahy Hotel or Le Chambre de Voyageur

Day 5:

Antsirabe – Miandrivazo (230 km): The morning drive straight to Miandrivazo. The drive west will lead us to the hottest town in Madagascar, Miandrivazo our starting point of the famous river descent of Tsiribihina .At Miandrivazo is a great market where you can purchase any last minute items you need for our river adventure such as; hats, sunscreen or clothes. We will spend the right here before setting out on our river adventure, Overnight at Hotel Miandrivazo, Soalihy or Princesses Hotel.

Day 6-7-8:

River Tsirihibina: Beginning of the calm river journey on the majestic Tsiribihina River, using traditional boats made out of one trunk of wood (pirogue). The trip is restful and you can just relax when nature is passing by. If you like some exercise you can help the boatmen peddle. There is possibility to spot the birds, lemurs and sometimes even the crocodiles. We also pass by some villages, where you can meet local people and see their everyday chores. End of the days, before the nightfall, we make our camp on the riverbank and enjoy the campfire, a good meal and a sky full of stars. Break in the Anosin’ny Ampela, the beautiful waterfall, where you can wash and refresh yourself during the trip. During the two and half days we will pass through diverse landscapes, isolated natural wilderness, reminding you how far away you are from home. Overall there is two nights in tent. After the river trip you’ll stay in a normal hotel.

Day 9:

Antsiraraka – Bekopaka (170 km): Today is our last and half day paddling. Trek till the remote village of Antsiraraka where a 4WD is taking you to Belo for lunch then continue driving till Bekopaka crossing the two river Tsiribihina and Manambolo by ferry boat. Overnight at Hotel Orchid or Olympy du Bemaraha.

Day 10:

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park: Tsingy of Bemaraha is the enormous UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the limestone plateau. Tsingy is the karstic plateau, which the groundwater is turned into the sharp lime stones. In the Tsingy you can pass your way through the narrow rocks, low caves and high sharps all the way to the top. There is couple of walk circuits with bridges, ladders, steps and cables for the harness. You can also visit in the small Tsingy; which close of the village. Optional, it is possible to hire a traditional pirogue and visit in the Gorge of Manambolo. Overnight the same Hotel

Day 11:

Bekopaka – Kirindy: Today, you will drive to kirindy via the Baobabs avenue.You will stop at this beautiful baobab avenue for photos again. This natural avenue of imposing Grinder’s baobabs is one of Madagascar’s must-see sights. It is located some 45 minutes from Morondava. This is on the dusty track to kirindy reserve; Baobabs Alley is the best visited around sunrise or sunset. The s because the softer light brings out the red tones of the tree trunks and makes for a splendid photos opportunity. You will arrive at kirindy after 2hours visit then you will you will visit the forest of Kirindy. The kirindy is the best place in the whole island to observe FOSSA (the biggest carnivorous and cat like of Madagascar) It also home to seven species of lemur. The most common are the common brown lemurs and the Verreaux’s Sifakas. This evening in Kirindy you will do a night walk to find the smallest lemurs known as mouse lemurs and other night active animals. Overnight at Kirindy Lodge or Relais de Kirindy.

Day 12:

Kirindy- Morondava (60 km for 3 hours): Morning visit of the reserve of kirindy. Kirindy is the best place in the whole island to observe FOSSA (the biggest carnivorous and cat like of Madagascar) it also to seven species of lemur. The most common are the common brown lemurs and the Verreaux’s Sifakas. These longed, seven-pound lemurs, white with dark patches, leap among tree trunks high in the canopy, propelled by their powerful hind legs but continually maintaining an upright posture. The remaining species are nocturnal: The rare Coquerel’s gant mous lemur and pygmy mouse-lemur, fork-croned lemur, grar muse lemur, western fat- taled dwarf lemur and red –tailed sportive lemur.Serveral bats, tenrecs, mongises and rodents complete the mamal population. 40 birds, 50 reptiles and 15 amphibians’ spaces are also found in this magnificent forest. After visit drive to Morondava Overnight at Hotel Morondava, Vezo beach, or Laguna Beach.

Day 13:

Morondava- Antananarivo: Transfer to the airport of Morondava following your domestic flight schedule to fly to Antananarivo. Overnight at Sakamanga, Chalet do Rose Hotel Morondava –MOQ, Antananarivo-TNR.

Day 14:

Antananarivo - Out: Before we transfer you to the international airport of Antananarivo, will offer at free city tour depending your time. This can be the west of the lemur’s Park located 25Km west of Antananarivo or the Queen’s Palace ,then visit King Palace around 21km North of Antananarivo follow the shopping time at La Route Digue on the way to the airport.
